Skilyr Hicks passed away on December 6, 2021. According to officials, her cause of death was an accidental drug overdose. She was found in a friend’s home in Liberty, South Carolina. The toxicology report later confirmed the presence of fentanyl, a dangerously potent synthetic opioid that’s been claiming lives across the U.S. at an alarming rate.

As I sat with this news, I couldn’t help but think about the pressure so many young talents face. Skilyr had shared her struggles with mental health and addiction publicly. She was open about the dark moments in her life, which made her music feel so raw and real. But fame doesn’t protect anyone from pain.

It’s heartbreaking to know that someone who brought light to others through her voice couldn’t escape the shadows closing in on her own life.
