Game development technology is now more advanced than ever. AI can even be used to create games. Previously, developers would have to spend months creating the perfect landscape, adding trees, rivers and even mountains. This would often mean spending hours on menial tasks, which hindered the design process. Now, however, developers are teaching AI how to create games, allowing human developers to work on other aspects of the game, such as the character and the story.
Algorithms and AI
AI lays down a lot of the foundation when creating content, so developers have a solid starting point when turning their vision into a reality. Graphics, colors and even the speed of the game have to be considered, along with character movement. PC titles can take months, and sometimes years to develop.
As mentioned above, AI is helping a lot with this, and titles that would normally take a decade to create can now be finished in a matter of years. AI is great at doing a lot of the legwork when it comes to complex titles, but with that in mind, it’s down to the developer to ensure that the title is compatible across numerous systems.
More than Programming
World creation is incredibly complex. Developers have to be aware of mathematics, how animals behave, physics, how things blow in the wind and even how shadows are created. Even if a particular title doesn’t take place in the real world, it’s still important for the person who is in charge of development to make it feel as authentic as they possibly can. Things also have to syndicate with each other. If there’s rain, this could influence the shadows that are cast on the ground and the general color of the sky. This can influence the animals that come out in the virtual world, if some are nocturnal or if some hunt at certain times of the day. It’s a domino effect, and one small change can set off a spiral of related events that go far beyond the original trigger.
Game developers are wizards of the digital sphere. They work their magic by embracing physics, math, social dialogue and even adopting an understanding of the natural world. This has led to the creation of bigger and better titles, and thanks to AI, it’s easy to scale.
