“While it’s great that we can cook up some delicious burgers, delicious hot dogs and spicy kebabs in the garden, not everyone realizes that they may in fact be eating expired meat use.
“If meat is spoiled, it can change color, become slimy and have a rancid smell.
“Of course, all expired meat must be thrown away immediately but this can be prevented in the first place.
“If you know you won’t eat the meat before its expiration date, just put it in the freezer and defrost as needed.”
Here are signs of expired meat:
Visible mold
One of the most obvious ways to identify foreign meat is visible mold. Not all mold appears on the outside, so be sure to check the inside for peace of mind.
Bad smell
If the meat has a strong, pungent smell like rotten eggs, there is a high possibility that the meat is not safe to eat. In general, a slightly sour smell is usually safe to cook with as long as it’s within its expiration date, but if the smell makes you nauseous, it needs to be removed.
Maggots
If meat is left out of the refrigerator or freezer for a long time, it will become a haven for white maggots. If your meat has even one maggot in it – don’t use it.
Discoloration
Each type of meat has different color markings that can indicate it has expired. Spoiled beef often turns gray or greenish if stored incorrectly. Chicken meat tends to turn yellow. Pork may turn gray or brown.
Slimy texture
A slimy or ‘sticky’ texture may indicate that the meat is expired or expired. Remember to check for other signs before deciding whether to cook it or throw it away.
Humidity
Many people think that having a lot of moisture in meat is a good thing – but only after it’s been cooked. If it had a lot of moisture before then it may not be safe to eat because it may have been improperly packaged.
