Dao Hong Son sets Vietnamese MMA record when defeating Johnny Tri Nguyen’s student
Dao Hong Son’s lightning-fast victory helped him set a record on the debut day of the Vietnamese MMA tournament LION Championship.
The attraction of LION Championship 14 focused entirely on the debut of the 31st & 32nd SEA Games Jujitsu Gold Medalist, 2022 World Beach Jujitsu Gold Medalist Dao Hong Son in the 56kg weight class in the match with Pham Ngoc Canh (Lien Phong Martial Arts School).
Pham Ngoc Canh blocked Dao Hong Son’s first grapple, but was continuously hit by his opponent’s backhand. The decision to rush into the grapple by “Wolf Warrior” immediately paid the price when he approached a Jujitsu master. Dao Hong Son immediately deployed an armbar in mid-air, forcing Ngoc Canh to clap his hands and admit defeat.

The victory in the 17th second of round 1 officially helped Dao Hong Son become the owner of the fastest choke in LION Championship after three seasons. The previous record belonged to Trinh Huu Minh when he defeated Dao Huu Quy at LION Championship 08 with a straight ankle lock at 30 seconds of round 1.
Dao Hong Son set the record right in his debut match of LION Championship.
The main match of the event between Nguyen Hoang Thach (Lien Phong Martial Arts School) and Tran Trong Kim (MMA Biotown – PFC Phu Quoc) also took place under the admiring eyes of the audience. The two fighters gave each other fiery exchanges until the third round.
In the first two rounds, Hoang Thach showed his dominance with a variety of attacking situations using a series of punches and kicks. His knee strikes and straight punches from behind caused Trong Kim to bleed above his left eye. However, the 34-year-old veteran Trong Kim still persevered and surprised him with elbow strikes at close range.
In round 3, Hoang Thach made a decision that created a turning point in the match. He performed a takedown that brought Trong Kim down to the ring. The subsequent turn helped Hoang Thach execute a precise guillotine choke, finishing Trong Kim at 2 minutes and 55 seconds of round 3. The tense match between Trong Kim and Hoang Thach also helped the two fighters receive the “Fight Of The Night” award with 10 million VND in bonus money for each.
The LION Championship A-Class matches also witnessed many notable finishes. The 2022 77kg runner-up Ly Van Huynh returned with a kick to the liver, knocking out Luu Nhan Nghia after just over 1 minute of competition. Meanwhile, national Jujitsu champion Phan Thanh Tung continued to show overwhelming strength when defeating Le Huy Hoang with a choke in round 1. In the remaining match of the A-Class, the 2022 women’s 52kg runner-up Nguyen Vu Quynh Hoa won on points against Le Thi Thuy Vy (Lien Phong Martial Arts School).
The appearance of Dao Hong Son, the two finishing moves of Nguyen Hoang Thach, Phan Thanh Tung or the return of Ly Van Huynh, Nguyen Vu Quynh Hoa promise many remarkable developments in the coming time. The next event LION Championship 15 will return to the capital Hanoi on July 13 at Tay Ho Stadium.
