House of the Dragon Just Used 3 Words Game of Thrones Fans Don’t Want to Hear

House of the Dragon Season 2 has come to an end, and the finale didn’t miss the opportunity to include one of George RR Martin’s most famous lines.

Much of Season 2 has been spent with Daemon in Harrenhal, with suspicions running high that he might prove disloyal to Rhaenyra. But in Episode 8, he solidifies his oath to his queen and raises an army on her behalf, but not before saying three words that no one expected.

When Rhaenyra arrives at Harrenhal to confront him, Daemon reveals what he saw in a vision, telling her that trouble is ahead. Specifically, he says: “Winter is coming.”

Any Game of Thrones fan will be familiar with this particular phrase, plastered all over the original show’s marketing. It’s a promise of what’s to come in the fantasy world, even if it doesn’t quite come to that.

Inserting this dialogue into the prequel series might seem like a clever way to gain nostalgia-based respect from House of the Dragon viewers, but it seems the opposite has happened.

In fact, many are horrified that the show attempted to include one of Game of Thrones’ most iconic lines. For one, it’s just a reminder of how the original show ended on a sour note.

“Daemon saw Dany and the Night King’s army and said ‘winter is coming’ just to have Bran Stark take the throne……… all this just to make Jon Snow a Targaryen for no reason… I can’t believe they took what was ours,” one X user wrote.

“What a shame, why did they make him say that,” wrote another.

A commenter said: “Emphasizing the nostalgia of an ending we all hated, oh my god, what the hell are the writers doing.”

“That has nothing to do with the series. NOTHING,” another user said of the phrase.
