Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress said: “People may be surprised to hear it but beer can have several benefits in your garden when used properly.

“Of course we don’t advise excessive use of it, that would lead to a very sticky and probably smelly situation.

“But in some instances it can be very handy! The acidity of beer means it’s great to help loosen rust on garden tools and debris left on the BBQ.

“It’s also a fantastic way to capture snails and slugs that have been ruining your outdoor space. “

How to use beer in your garden:

Beer is great for breaking down rust on tools and other metal due to its acidity. Pour some on the affected area, leave it for a few minutes before wiping it down along with the rust.

  1. Get rid of slugs and snails

Slugs and snails love the smell of beer. Pour a small amount into a shallow dish and leave it out overnight. By the morning the pests will have made their way to the beer and have gotten stuck in the liquid.

Cleaning the BBQ can be a tough job especially when there is food residue stuck to the grill. Turn on the grill for around 10 minutes and let it heat up and soften any debris. Once you’ve turned it off, pour a small amount of beer onto the surface and let it sizzle away before scrubbing the grill with a scouring pad.

  1. Revive garden furniture

Beer is believed to help clean wood and remove stains. Revive old and dull wooden garden furniture by pouring some beer onto a cloth before wiping down wooden areas. Go over the area again with a clean dry cloth.
