Five surprising uses of beer you may not know about
Beer has been praised as the secret tool to achieving a clean and beautiful garden.
Garden boss Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress has shared how beer can help revive old wooden furniture, loosen rust and get rid of slugs and snails.
The acidity in beer makes it a great cleaning product, breaking down debris and dirt and making it easier to remove.
The experts advise using it to loosen rust on garden tools and clean old food off of the BBQ.
Avid gardeners may also be surprised to know that beer can be added to their compost piles.
Not only will it keep it moist but its natural yeast will help break down its compounds and make it richer.
Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress said: “People may be surprised to hear it but beer can have several benefits in your garden when used properly.
“Of course we don’t advise excessive use of it, that would lead to a very sticky and probably smelly situation.
“But in some instances it can be very handy! The acidity of beer means it’s great to help loosen rust on garden tools and debris left on the BBQ.
“It’s also a fantastic way to capture snails and slugs that have been ruining your outdoor space. “
How to use beer in your garden:
- Loosen rust
Beer is great for breaking down rust on tools and other metal due to its acidity. Pour some on the affected area, leave it for a few minutes before wiping it down along with the rust.
- Get rid of slugs and snails
Slugs and snails love the smell of beer. Pour a small amount into a shallow dish and leave it out overnight. By the morning the pests will have made their way to the beer and have gotten stuck in the liquid.
- Add it to your compost
Beer is a great way to moisten compost. It’s natural yeast and sugars can help break down the organic compounds in your compost and make it richer.
- Clean the BBQ
Cleaning the BBQ can be a tough job especially when there is food residue stuck to the grill. Turn on the grill for around 10 minutes and let it heat up and soften any debris. Once you’ve turned it off, pour a small amount of beer onto the surface and let it sizzle away before scrubbing the grill with a scouring pad.
- Revive garden furniture
Beer is believed to help clean wood and remove stains. Revive old and dull wooden garden furniture by pouring some beer onto a cloth before wiping down wooden areas. Go over the area again with a clean dry cloth.
