Phil Mickelson to Take Part in LIV Golf Invitational Series

He said he fully realized and respected that some people could disagree with his decision, as Saudi Arabia backed the event. The golf star hasn’t taken part in tournaments since his remarks about the controversial tour went public in February.

Phil Mickelson was the last celebrity to join the field of the LIV Golf Invitational.

Phil Mickelson has not taken part in competitions since his February comments in favor of a golf league backed by Saudi Arabia that wants to rival the PGA Tour.

Mickelson won six big golf championships with the P.G.A. Championship last year. He will be among the other 48 golfers going for $25 million in prize money at the beginning of the competition Thursday at the Centurion Club near London. Previously, Dustin Johnson, who is number 15 in the men’s international golf hierarchy, also decided to take part in the alternative tour. According to The Telegraph, Johnson received $125 million to enter LIV Golf, whose major shareholder is the exclusive capital fund of Saudi Arabia.

The tour has also announced large appearance fees and six-figure payouts for each contestant.

Mickelson, who is among the most appreciable golfers of his age, got under serious fire after he said that the Saudis had a “horrible record on human rights”, mentioning the killing of Khashoggi — but stated he was nonetheless up for the new tour as it was a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Before that Mickelson blamed the PGA Tour on “obnoxious greed.” Afterward, he said his statements were “reckless,” but that cost him several longtime corporate sponsors, including KPMG and Workday, who terminated their association with him.

On Monday, Mickelson apologized again for his comments made a few months ago.

The game will be one of 8 events in the LIV Golf Invitational Series. This season, Mickelson has taken part in three PGA Tour events.

Despite winning Masters three times, he skipped this year’s games. However, this week Mickelson said he planned to participate in forthcoming major championships. He is presently ready for the U.S. Open and the British Open.

A large number of other PGA Tour players, his old-time rival Tiger Woods among them, have condemned Mickelson’s negative standpoint on the tour.

Woods called Phil’s points of view on the tour and what the tour meant for them “polarizing”.

Rory McIlroy said Mickelson’s words were “naïve, selfish, egotistical, ignorant.”

Last week, McIlroy, who has been frank in his contempt for the LIV Golf tour, was contemptuous of the list of players who entered the contest which is to begin Thursday at the Centurion Club.

McIlroy stated he certainly didn’t think the field was anything “to jump up and down about”.

But Mickelson was positive.

He wrote on Twitter on Monday he was ”thrilled” to start with LIV Golf and that he appreciated all involved.
