A set of rectangles that are having bases and the intervals between the class boundaries is known as a histogram. Every rectangular bar is adjacent and it depicts various kinds of data.

What is a Histogram?

A graphical representation of some data where it is grouped into continuous ranges of numbers and where every range corresponds to a vertical bar is known as a histogram. In a histogram, the horizontal axis displays the number ranges and the vertical axis represents the amount that is found in each range.

Histogram Graph

A histogram graph is a type of graph that is used to show the representation of data. A histogram graph is used as a representation of the range of outcomes into columns forming along the x-axis. The y-axis represents the number of counts or occurrences in the data for every column.

Steps of Histogram

  • Step 1- A preferable scale has to be chosen to show the weights on the horizontal axis.
  • Step 2- Another preferable scale must be chosen for representing the counts or frequencies on the vertical axis.
  • Step 3- Then, bars are to be drawn corresponding to the given weights of the data using their frequencies.

Different Shapes of a Histogram

A histogram graph can be categorized into various kinds depending on the frequency distribution of the data. Normal distribution, skewed distribution, bimodal distribution, multimodal distribution, edge peak distribution, dog food distribution, comb distribution, and heart cut distribution are some of the many types of distribution. The histogram graph is used to represent all these kinds of distributions. There are 5 main types of histogram shapes, and they are:

  • Bell-Shaped Histogram
    The histogram carries only one peak at the given time interval. Hence, it is known as a bell-shaped histogram. Only one bar or column is taller than all the other bars.
  • Bimodal Histogram
    Unlike the bell-shaped histogram, the bimodal histogram contains two peaks. Since the graph has two such peaks, it is known as a bimodal histogram.
  • Skewed Right Histogram
    In the case of a skewed right histogram, the histogram is skewed towards the right. Specifically, the bars of the graph are skewed to the right. Therefore, we call it a skewed right histogram.
  • Skewed Left Histogram
    This one is just the opposite of what we have learned about the skewed right histogram. A skewed left histogram is skewed to the left, or more specifically, the bars are skewed to the left. Thus, such a type of histogram is named a skewed left histogram.
  • Uniform Histogram
    In a uniform histogram, all the drawn bars are more or less of equal height. When the bars of a histogram graph are almost of the same height, then it is known as a uniform histogram.

What is a Bar Chart?

A representation of numerical data by using a pictorial form of rectangles or bars that are having equal width and varying heights is called a bar chart. We call it a bar graph as well. The 2 types of bar charts are horizontal bar charts and vertical bar charts. Bar graphs are mainly used in corporate sectors. Some characteristics of a bar graph are:

  • They are used to compare varieties of data among different groups.
  • In bar charts, the relationship is represented by using the two axes.
