“You’ve got your people,” Brent Venables ready to help institutional unit move to SEC

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – It was a celebration at Everett Training Center on Monday morning when the Sooner Nation welcomed Brent Venables as football’s new head coach.

Fans, former players and current players gathered inside the center to hear Venables for the first time as head coach of the Sooners.

Venables said he spoke with members of the OU soccer team Sunday night and then had an in-person meeting with the team on campus on Monday.

“To be able to wake up today and go to the office and have a team meeting today, I’m not sure the last time I felt fulfilled and excited,” he said.

He said he was extremely grateful that the players put their faith in him.

“Only God can do this,” he added.

Venables said that Oklahoma is known as one of the biggest powerhouses in college football, and he’s prepared to take the Sooners into the SEC.

“Now leading and also passing one of the biggest transitions in college football, taking Oklahoma from the Big 12 to the SEC. You’ve got your people to take you on this journey. Also, make no mistake about it, Oklahoma has been and always will be the barometer in college football,” said Venables.

He said that winning is important, he also wants to make sure that Oklahoma acts as a program to support their players on and off the field. Venables said his main goal is to make sure the players have the tools to graduate with a degree, complete their goals and then win the championship.

“For our former players, you are always welcome. This is your house. This program is built by you and it will be maintained by you. Whatever you need, you come to my office. You contact me at any time. We are here for you and we are here for you,” he said.

Venables says he’s willing to push players to help them grow and prepare for what’s ahead.

“I love my boys. I will train them really, very hard, but I will love them more. I will love them more. We will use an exciting, fast, explosive and varied attack, combined with a physical, punitive, relentless and suffocating defense,” he said.
