A CLEANING expert has highlighted a nifty way to ensure your washing machine is in tip-top shape.
Irish TikTok star Laura de Barra shared this tip in a video posted to her 27,000 followers earlier this year.
It involves the little drawer where you put the detergent before turning off the appliance.
“You might be wondering why your clothes dispenser drawer is full of fabric softener and not using up the amount you put in each wash,” says Laura, 35.
She then removed the drawer from her washing machine to reveal the source of the problem.
As it turns out, the inside of the device contains “squirt holes,” which, as Laura says, pump water into the drawer to drain the water inside into the drum.
These holes are often clogged with residual power, limescale or mold, which means your detergent or fabric softener isn’t washing away effectively.
“If you notice a part isn’t fully aspirated during a cycle, that could mean the nozzles are clogged,” says Laura.

“Nearly always fabric softener.”
To remedy this situation, the former London-based property manager recommends cleaning the inside of the washing machine.
To do that, remove the dispenser drawer from your machine according to the instructions that came with the device.
In the space that the drawer has left, there are holes in the top of your machine.
Scrub those holes with an old toothbrush or dental brush. Pay attention to gentle cleaning so as not to damage the machine.
“Dental brushes are tiny because they’re small enough to fit in spray holes like these,” says Laura.
“The bristles are soft enough for your gums to not damage the machine.”
If there is a particularly stubborn mold outbreak in your machine, Laura recommends getting rid of the large guns.
Take an old toothbrush and dip it in a mixture of 50% vinegar and 50% water before scrubbing.
Once your spray holes are cleaned, your fabric softener should drain out of the dispenser compartment without any problems.
