There is a clever function hidden in the camera of your iPhone that you may know from Instagram.
The Boomerang feature is a popular trick in the Photos app — but your iPhone can also create them using the stock camera.
If you haven’t used Boomerang, you’re missing out.
It’s a fun feature that takes animated photos that bounce forward and backward.
Instagram launched a dedicated Boomerang video app back in 2015.
And it really put Boomerang 2020 on Instagram.
But there is a way to create your own on an iPhone using Apple’s Live Photo feature.
If you have Live Photos enabled, the images you capture will include short video clips on both sides.
When you hold your finger on a Live Photo, a small clip will play.
The feature has been around for years and debuted a long time ago on the iPhone 6S.
A few years later, Apple also added a Boomerang-style effect.
How to make boomerang from iPhone camera
For it to work, first make sure you’re using a recent version of iOS.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update to check – or read our guide to updating your iPhone.
Now open your iPhone camera and tap on Live Photo.
It’s the circle in the top right – when it’s off, a line appears through it. Make sure no line goes through the circle.
Then snap a photo of whatever you want, but preferably a scene with some movement.
Now go to your Photos app and open the image.
At the top left you will see a small text that says “Live” – tap on it.
Now you can choose between four different options.
You should select the bottom option: Bounce.
This will create a Boomerang style photo on your iPhone.
However, you can also use this feature to create repeating animated images or long exposure shots.
How to use Instagram Boomerang
You can also rely on Instagram to create a regular boomerang.
First, make sure your Instagram app is updated with the latest software.
Then open the app’s camera and upload a story.
On the left you will see an option for Boomerang – it looks like an infinity symbol.
This is a quick way to create a boomerang in Instagram and share it instantly.
