‘You don’t see it’: Michael Owen says pro footballers don’t do what Arsenal players did

Michael Owen was shocked when Kai Havertz fired wide at the Emirates Stadium against Manchester United on Sunday when he had a huge chance to score Arsenal’s opener.

After an exquisite first touch from Kai Havertz in the penalty area, his second strike that was to test the Manchester United keeper ended with Lisandro Martinez clearing the ball away as the Arsenal star barely touched the ball.

Former England striker Owen couldn’t believe what he was seeing as he explained that professional footballers just don’t do that and that he hasn’t seen it in what he said was “years and years”. Premier League Productions (09/03/23 at 17:25).

Of all the Arsenal players, Havertz was the last to have anything happen because he was already committed to his performances and that only adds fuel to the fire – Ian Wright had reacted to his performance yesterday.

While it did cost Arsenal at the time to put Manchester United ahead through Marcus Rashford, in the end the points were sealed in the most dramatic fashion for the home side via Declan Rice’s right foot – but Wright managed, I’ll admit, it was controversial and “dubious”.

One of Emirates’ summer signings in Rice is riding a wave while the other, as Michael Owen said, is “fighting for confidence”.

“You just don’t see that, do you?” said Owen. “For a professional footballer, it’s like just missing the ball. If the ball shoots across at 100 miles per hour, then that’s fine.

“But everything was calm and it was a nice gesture. It was right in front of him. And he missed the ball! I mean he missed the ball!?

Don’t kick someone when they’re on the ground

Pardon the pun, but don’t kick anyone when they’re down, and notwithstanding Arsenal’s victory and maintaining his unbeaten start, Havertz is still down.

The Germany international will need a reinforcement sooner rather than later as he is currently out of form while Arsenal win.

When it starts rearing its ugly head, when his team starts dropping points, he becomes a very easy target.
