You can change Amazon Alexa’s setting to make it quieter

She is one of the most popular virtual assistants in the world, her robotic voice echoing through millions of homes every day.

But while the voice-controlled assistant Alexa is often a useful presence in the home, she can also be annoying.

One of the biggest complaints about Amazon’s assistant loading into the Echo speaker range is its volume.

It makes using them at night or early in the morning a big problem, especially if you have small children.

Tinkering with volume settings can be a hassle, and even when you do, Alexa’s voice doesn’t get quieter.

Luckily, you can make Alexa whisper or shorten her responses to ensure she doesn’t cause any unwanted interference.

To do this, you need to enable “Whisper Mode” or “Brief Mode”.

What is Alexa Whisper Mode?

Your Echo speaker has a setting that, when enabled, causes Alexa to speak more quietly.

It’s called Whisper Mode and it’s designed to enable late-night Alexa conversations that don’t wake up your whole house.

You have to manually turn on whisper mode and then turn it on whenever you want to use it.

How to activate whisper mode

First you need to enable whisper mode in the Alexa app:

  • Start the app
  • Go to settings
  • Then go to Alexa Account
  • Next, click on Alexa Voice Responses
  • Then enable Whispered Responses

This allows Alexa to easily switch to whisper mode, but you’ll still have to turn it on every time you want to use it.

Just say “Alexa, turn on whisper mode” and she’ll speak in a hushed voice.

This will continue until you say “Alexa, turn off whisper mode.”

What is Alexa Short Mode?

Another feature that reduces the amount of Alexa in your life is short mode.

In short mode, Alexa speaks less and may play a short tone instead of providing a voice response.

For example, when Letter mode is on, Alexa doesn’t always say “OK,” but simply attends to the task at hand.

The mode is great for anyone who finds Alexa’s responses frustrating or wishes she were a little quieter.
