Here are some notable nuggets that happened during Sunday’s Yankees spring training:
Isiah Kiner-Falefa smashed his first home run of the spring, a two-run shot to left field in the first inning. The shortstop, who has worked with Justin Turner and his hitting coach Doug Latta during the offseason, has focused on getting the ball more airborne.
Luis Gil, one of the Yankees’ young pitchers who struggled to get on the roster as a long relief option, gave up five earned runs on eight hits over 2 ¹/₃⅓ innings. He also made a mistake when Bo Bichette stole third base and pocketed it before Josh Donaldson could get there, allowing two runs to be scored.
Tim Locastro showed his full speed in the fourth inning, hitting a line drive into the gap in what looked like a double before going third when he saw left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. slip after catching the ball. Locastro’s wheels give him a chance to make the team as an extra outfielder.
The schedule for Monday
Left-hander JP Sears will play the Phillies in the Yankees’ penultimate game in the Grapefruit League at 1:05 p.m. at Steinbrenner Field.
