WWE suspends Sasha Banks, Naomi for Monday Night Raw Walkout

Sasha Banks and Naomi are paying the price for quitting Monday Night Raw earlier this week.

WWE announced on Friday Night SmackDown that its women’s tag team champions were “indefinitely suspended” and stripped of their titles after refusing to wrestle in the Main Event Six Pack Challenge match and that a tournament will be held to crown new champions. WWE had announced on Raw that the two women had left prior to the main event change and decided to once again address the situation head-on on the show.

Merchandise pages from Banks and Naomi was also removed from the WWE Shop at the time of publication.

“Sasha Banks and Naomi let us all down,” Michael Cole said on Friday’s SmackDown. “The WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions left the show and exited the building during Monday Night Raw.”

He then stuck to the details of the WWE side of Monday’s events, saying the two women took their tag team championships to Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis’ office, left them there and exited the arena.

“Your actions have disappointed millions of WWE fans and other Superstars,” said Cole before announcing the suspension.

According to WWE’s statement Monday, Banks and Naomi exited Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va., refusing to participate in the match with Becky Lynch, Asuka, Doudrop and Niki ASH to see the No. 1 contender for Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair to investigate Hell in a Cell pay-per-view on June 5th. Asuka defeated Lynch to take his spot in a singles match.

According to Fightful Select, Naomi was set to win the match and face Belair, and Banks would go into a singles program with SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, potentially leaving her tag team gold and division in limbo. The Banks reportedly took up the issues directly with WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that day.

WWE’s statement on the events also said that Banks and Naomi – who have yet to tell their side of the story in person – felt disrespected as tag team champions and “felt uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents.” Fightful Select reported that Banks and Naomi’s issues centered on the direction of the women’s tag team division and did not concern the women in the match.

If WWE wants to hold a scripted tournament, they’ll likely need to form some new women’s tag teams, since there are technically only three other known teams on the roster outside of Banks and Naomi.
