The woman – who uses the username Perublanket39 – wrote in the caption: “Vulture keep going around this house in my neighborhood. Should we call someone? “

Commentators were quick to offer sinister reasons why bird – something that eats dead animals – is hovering overhead.

Some urged the woman to do a welfare check for the occupants.

But she quickly confirmed that the house belonged to her parents, both of which were fine.

The woman said her family wasn’t the only target – with birds flying over ten homes in the neighbourhood.

Other Reddit users were quick to explain what the vultures mean.

One person wrote: “Is that a gas leak? The unique smell is the additive that attracts scavengers to the leak.

“This helps technicians identify the source of the leak.”

Turkish vultures are commonly used by natural gas companies to locate gas pipeline leaks.

Ethyl mercaptan – a chemical added to the gas so people can smell it – is also emitted from animal carcasses, making it very well suited for birds.
