Woman arrested at JFK for attempting to smuggle 28 pounds of cocaine in wheelchair wheels

It was wheelie-y!
A woman was arrested at JFK airport when she tried to smuggle 28 pounds of cocaine – in the tires of her wheelchair, authorities said Monday.
Federal agents suspected something was wrong with Emelinda Paulino De Rivas’ wheelchair when she arrived in New York City Thursday from Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officers said they noticed that the wheelchair’s tires were not spinning.
So they X-rayed the four rubber wheels and discovered about 28 pounds of cocaine, worth nearly half a million dollars, stuffed into bags, the FBI said.
De Rivas, a Dominican national, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of federal drug smuggling.

“CBP is working steadfastly and resolutely with our partners to identify the transnational criminal networks responsible for importing these deadly drugs into our neighborhoods,” Francis Russo, director of CBP’s New York office, said in a statement.
