MADISON, WI (WSAU) – The Wisconsin Woodchucks are one of 17 minor league sports teams in the state that will receive funding from the state as COVID-19 recovery continues.

“Unfortunately, like many businesses in our travel industry, these people have been particularly hard hit by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This investment will continue to help fuel our state’s recovery and ensure a strong recovery for our local communities,” Governor Evers said in a press release.

Woodchucks was awarded $200,000. Other Northwoods League teams to receive sponsorship include the Eau Claire Express, Madison Mallards, Kenosha Kingfish and the Lakeshore Chinooks.

Wisconsin Rapids Rafters also received a $200,000 grant through the program.

All said 17 clubs received more than $2.5 million. More than 50 movie theater owners have received grants totaling $10 million as part of the latest round of programs. That includes Marcus Cinemas, which owns the Cedar Creek Theater in Rothschild.
