Nine-time Oscar presenter Billy Crystal has described Will Smith’s slap in the face at the awards ceremony as “an assault” and “an extremely disturbing incident”.
During the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, Smith took the stage and slapped host Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a joke about his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
Five days after the incident (Friday, April 1), Smith made the decision to resign from the Academy.
On a recent appearance on the Bob Costas talk show Back on the record Speaking on HBO Max, Crystal called the altercation “certainly a highly disturbing incident. It was an attack. I have had experiences. I’ve hosted the Grammys three times and had things thrown at me.”
The Independent has reached out to Smith representatives for comment.
Crystal went on to talk about the importance of having a single host during a ceremony, a trend that is losing popularity. “I sort of set myself up to host the show, really host the show, so you can tie it together,” Crystal said.
“So whenever I see that it’s a no-host show, yes it went quicker, but there’s no one there capitalizing on anything and making the audience feel like someone’s in charge. “
Crystal has previously poked fun at the slap in the face at the end of his new Broadway show. Mr Saturday night, The New York Post reported, telling the audience, “We got through a show and nobody got hit. Unbelievable.”
Rock was also criticized for his joke about Pinkett Smith, made at the expense of her balding (caused by alopecia).
While Rock has yet to comment on the joke himself, sources reportedly said TMZ that he “had no idea” Pinkett Smith had alopecia.
