Will Smith has claimed Rihanna reacted positively after seeing his new film emancipation.
The Fenty Beauty founder attended a special screening of the film alongside A$AP Rocky, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle and other celebrities last month.
Smith tells E! news that Rihanna loved “the cinematography” of the film.
“She couldn’t get over the look of the film and how it felt,” he said.
“The great thing about black people is that they’re talking to the screen all the time, so you don’t have to ask people’s opinions,” Smith joked. “So I didn’t have to ask anyone in the room for their opinion.”
emancipation follows the story of Peter (Smith), a slave who escapes from a Louisiana plantation after being brutally flogged.
Then he must outwit cold-blooded hunters and the unforgiving swamps of Louisiana on an agonizing journey north.
This film will be the first Smith project to be released after the actor slapped presenter Chris Rock in the face onstage over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
Smith spoke to him during the new movie’s red carpet premiere on Wednesday (November 30). The Hollywood Reporter about what he envisioned from the film, highlighting the “potential service it could have for modern day social conversations”.
“I thought it would be a necessary reminder of some of the paths we’ve taken as a country in the past, to possibly avert one of those similar paths,” he said.
“To have a film like this for me at this time, and even at this time in my life, is poetic perfection.”
