Why Spencer Dutton is unlikely to die at the end of 1923 Season 1 Episode 5
It might be tempting to conclude after Season 1, Episode 5 of the 1923 Yellowstone prequel that Spencer Dutton — James and Margaret’s youngest son — won’t make it back to Montana alive, but there are a few good reasons why he won’t can die (yet).
He and Alexandra are making their way back to Montana from Africa when the captain of their tugboat dies of what Vulture says is likely tuberculosis.
Since the “landlubbers” have no idea about boating, their ship collides with an abandoned ghost ship. they capsize. When the camera pulls away, the scene looks lifeless. But as Vulture also notes, it’s hard to believe that Spencer Dutton and his fiancé, Alexandra, are dead. Here’s why.
Why Spencer Dutton Probably Won’t Die in 1923 Season 1 Episode 5
While the cliffhanger will have many viewers biting their fingernails, there is still a shot of Spencer that was included in an earlier preview that hasn’t been played on the series.
Pajiba describes it as showing him shirtless, “aiming at a shark” with a shotgun. The fact that we haven’t seen it yet strongly suggests that Spencer dies, doesn’t die, or doesn’t die at the end of season 1 episode 5 of 1923 or between episodes 5 and 6.
Not only that. In the first episode, Elsa Dutton states in her narration that one of James Dutton’s children would live to see his “children grow” and “the fate of the family through the Depression and every other hell of the 20th century.” to wear”.
At this point in Yellowstone’s grand narrative, Spencer Dutton is James’ only surviving child, which Pajiba says means he will survive and navigate the family’s journey through the Great Depression.
There are more subjective reasons to believe that Spencer Dutton didn’t die in 1923—yet

And as Outsider wrote after Episode 3’s “rough events,” the standard expectation that John Dutton Sr’s son Jack would carry on his father’s legacy isn’t quite as strong.
Both Spencer and Alexandra said they “see our son’s face” in each other’s faces as well. Which is pretty suggestive. And Outsider continues, preparing audiences for a “bait and switch” in which Spencer and Alexandra “have that son” and he becomes “essential to the Dutton family tree.”
Does Spencer have children?
Not yet, no. Born in 1893 to James and Margaret Dutton, Spencer is the younger brother of John and Elsa.
He met Alexandra after the war on a safari hunt in Africa. she leaves her Fiancé Arthur to accompany Spencer on a trip to hunt a hyena.
One thing leads to another – they spend a night in a tree, besieged by animals. And while on vacation in Zanzibar, Spencer receives a letter from his aunt Cara, informing him of his brother’s death. The letter is three months old.
However, the John Dutton we meet in the Yellowstone flashbacks was born around 1924. Meaning: If Spencer and Alexandra have children in 1923, it will probably happen pretty soon.
