Amazon confirmed that an undisclosed issue caused the crash but said service has now been restored.

A spokesperson told the PA news agency: “This morning, we experienced an issue that affected the ability of some Alexa customers to interact with the service.

“Alexa service is working normally now.”

According to service status website DownDector, users in the UK started reporting issues with Alexa around 7am on Friday, with more than 8,000 reports recorded in the next hour.

Many users reported being unable to wake their voice-activated Amazon Echo smart device, with some seeing a red light ring and a message asking them to try again later or “something went wrong”.

Others have taken to social media to complain about not being able to use their Alexa-enabled devices to play music or radio, access alarms and reminders, or perform other daily tasks.

The virtual assistant is built into the millions of devices available in the UK, including smart speakers and home hubs, which can be used to control devices around the home.
