THE Jackson 5 is a family band formed and managed by patriarch Joe Jackson from 1964 to 1989.
The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and was a springboard to Michael Jackson’s success as an independent artist.
Why is Janet Jackson not in Jackson 5?
Janet Jackson, the youngest of 10 children of Joe, was born in 1966. Her father started organizing his eldest children to participate in musical activities two years ago.
The original group, which consisted of five of Janet’s six brothers, signed a record deal in 1967, when Janet was just an infant.
Janet later proved to be an incredibly talented singer and performer in her own right. She has released 11 studio albums, starting with an album of the same name in 1982 and ending with Unbreakable in 2015.
In a career spanning nearly four decades, Janet has sold around 100 million records, ranking 9th of all time in sales by a female artist. She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, more than 20 years after her brothers were admitted.
Jackson, despite her contributions to pop culture as a popular singer and icon, is often remembered for the wardrobe malfunction that occurred during a Super Bowl halftime performance with Justin Timberlake in 2004.
Who was in Jackson 5?
Over the years, the action became more refined, eventually cementing a lineup that featured Joe Jackson’s five sons, including Michael. This arrangement continued for ten years until Jermaine Jackson left the group in 1975.
Jackson’s youngest son, Randy, filled the void until Jermaine eventually joined the band in 1983.
Following Jermaine’s return, the band was back to its original form, but this would only last a year. Michael left side Jackson 5 in 1984. The success of Michael’s Thriller album propelled him towards a solo career.
The brothers reunited on stage in 2001 at Madison Square Garden for an event called Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary. This was the last performance to feature all of the original Jackson 5 members.
Michael died in 2009 at the age of 50.
What are some of Jackson 5’s biggest hits?
Jackson 5 was a huge commercial success. Each of their studio recordings entered the US Billboard Top 200, with Diana Ross Presenting The Jackson 5, ABC, Third Album and Lookin’ Through the Windows crack top 10.
The ABC song is known for Michael’s youthful vocals and schoolyard vibe. Michael was only 11 years old when the song was released in 1970.
The song, and Michael, became emotional immediately after Jackson 5 performed it on Ed Sullivan show.
In 1975, the group moved from Motown Records to Epic Records. During the rebranding process, the band was renamed The Jacksons. Called The Jacksons, the group reached #4 on the US Top Chart for their album Victory.
Today, Sony Corporation owns the rights to Michael Jackson’s music portfolio, having purchased a stake in Jackson from his estate following the singer’s death.
