ALMOST half the birds in the world join in the so-called twilight choir.

If you were woken up by birdsong outside, you might not be as thrilled by the morning birdsong from March to July each year.

Why do birds sing in the morning?

Morning bird song can be wonderful to hear, beginning with a few chirps which then fill the air when there is a large bird population.

The early hours are dark and the air is still, background noise is minimal, so there’s a better time to sing.

The noise can spread up to 20 times further than on a busy day.

Songbirds sing for a variety of reasons, some to mark their territory, others to find a mate.

The amount of singing varies throughout the year but is at its highest in May and June when the birds are looking for a mate.

The morning chorus builds up much like an orchestra, beginning with robins, blackbirds and thrushes.

Other birds, such as wrens and blue tits, only join in singing when there is enough light for them to see.

Why do birds chirp at night?

One of the first birds to sing in the morning, the robin is also one of the last to stop singing at night.

The song is primarily a signal to others around them, be it at night or in the morning.

One reason is that they have found food or danger and are warning others.

Birds also sing to try to attract a mate or to mark their territory.

Nocturnal birds will sing at night instead of joining the dawn chorus.

These include owls, corncrakes, nightjars and nightingales.

All birds are subject to the rhythm of light and dark, and their singing is part of this habitual behavior.
