Who is Bruno and why aren’t we talking about him?

In Disney‘s Encanto, each madrigal family member has a unique gift that contributes to the family and community. However, as the film progresses, we learn that there is one character who shouldn’t be named. Despite the Madrigal family’s refusal to talk about him, it seems they even sing about not wanting to talk about him.
The song “We’re not talking about Bruno‘ made it to the Oscars with a performance by Megan Thee Stallion and Luis Fonsi. This left many viewers wondering who Bruno is and why aren’t we talking about him?

“Encanto” follows the gifted madrigal family
When Encanto begins, we follow Mirabel as she describes each member of her family and her gift. It is made clear that Abuela is directing the show. Abuela has three children, triplets named Pepa, Julieta and Bruno. The family grew as each of Abuela’s children had children of their own.
Mirabel is Julia’s daughter. Each year, the anthropomorphic casita presents each family member with a gift. Although each person received theirs without exception, Mirabel’s year was different. Casita did not give her a gift, which led to Abuela constantly dumping her.
It is implied that Mirabel’s gift could be discernment. She has a vision of the casita falling apart and the candle going out. She was also the first person to notice that Luisa lost her gift.

At Mirabel finds out about her uncle Bruno, who possesses the gift of foresight, she begins her journey to find him. Unbeknownst to her, he had been living in the casita the whole time. She finds the shards of Bruno’s prophecy jar, which she tries to piece together. Bruno informs her about the prophecy, which interestingly concerns her.
After Abuela accuses Mirabel of trying to divide the family, Mirabel confronts her. This causes a rift in the casita, causing the candle to go out and the madrigals to lose their power. Abuela and Mirabel later reconcile. They are able to gather everyone to rebuild the casita, thus restoring their powers.
Who is Bruno and why aren’t we talking about him?

When Mirabel finds out about Bruno, she asks her aunt Pepa about him, but Pepa insists that the madrigals don’t talk about Bruno. She even starts singing and goes into detail about not talking about her uncle.
In the song, each family member and villager tells about their experiences dealing with Bruno and his fate while reading. Pepa discusses Bruno destroying their wedding day by prophesying rain, which is ironic given her gift’s connection to the weather. Dolores, who has the gift of hearing, tells Mirabel that she can hear Bruno anytime, anywhere.
Meanwhile, Bruno appears in the background dolores‘ Verse on the second floor of the casita. He seems to be jamming to the music. Others in the song include Senora Pez Muertos, who says Bruno predicted her fish’s death.
Corresponding Disney fandom, the woman’s name is a portmanteau of the words Pez and Muertos, meaning live fish and death, perhaps foretelling her misfortune. The film suggests that Abuela may have banished Bruno for foreseeing the destruction of the casita and the end of the madrigal’s powers, which she didn’t want to know about.
The song reached the top of the charts
