Whitney Biennial 2022: Over $1,000 worth of artwork stolen during party at New York Museum

Artworks worth over $1,000 were reportedly stolen during a party at a New York museum.

New York police were notified of the theft on May 24, almost two months after the night in question at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The Whitney Biennial exhibition is held at the museum every two years and is closely followed for its presentation of contemporary art.

According to a report from Artnet, the artwork was allegedly removed from the museum on March 30, the night of an exhibition opening event for museum members.

The museum confirmed the incident in a statement to the outlet, saying that “an element of a biennial art installation [was] found missing. It has been located and is in the possession of the museum,” without providing further details.

Three artists present at the event told Artnet they were unaware of the theft at the time.

According to a police report, the artwork was stolen directly from the museum.

This year’s exhibition was her 80thth Issue after being postponed by a year due to Covid.

Co-curated by David Breslin and Adrienne Edwards, it brought together the work of 63 artists.

The exhibition, titled Whitney Biennial 2022: Quiet as It’s Kept, took place on the fifth and sixth floors of the museum and will be on view through September 5.
