White Lotus fans have a few theories about that Episode 5 cliffhanger

The White Lotus Fans were left in shock after watching the final scene of Season 5’s second season on Monday (November 28) – and many have shared their theories as to why it happened.

The scene in question, starring Leo Woodall as the Essex Hunk Jack, was so surprising that the actor admitted it left him “speechless” the first time he saw it in the script.

Woodall was a midseason addon to the second season of the HBO comedy-drama, playing the new love interest of Portia (Haley Lu Richardson).

His character was introduced as the nephew of Tanya’s (Jennifer Coolidge) new boyfriend Quentin (Tom Hollander), an English millionaire vacationing in Sicily.

During the fifth episode of the season entitled “That’s Amore”, Tanya is wandering around Quentin’s palazzo when, following grunts, she comes across Quentin and Jack having sex.

There are numerous explanations for this, and the scene seems unlikely to be actual incest as many fans of the show suspect there must be a twist.

Is it possible that Jack isn’t Quentin’s nephew? One theory on Reddit is that Jack is a sex worker hired by Quentin to travel to Sicily. After all, he speaks with a Cockney accent, while his “uncle” is terribly posh.

Early in the episode, Jack is shown that if he and Portia go out to dinner, despite his own family’s apparent wealth, he cannot afford to pay.

Another theory circulating on Twitter and Reddit is that the straight American cowboy Quentin tells Tanya once loved is actually Tanya’s husband Greg (Jon Gries), who left her alone in Sicily . There was evidence that Quentin befriended Tanya so he and Greg could run away with their money.

Some have suggested that Quentin is trying to either subtly persuade Tanya to take her own life or to portray her murder as a suicide since he brought her to Madama Butterfly, the opera in which the protagonist dies by suicide.

They theorized that Jack could be part of this plan – to distract Portia while Quentin gets inside Tanya’s head.

“Okay, I’ve had time to process The White Lotus and my official theory is that Greg is Quentin’s aforementioned American lover and they are orchestrating a lengthy con that has been in the works since season one,” one viewer tweeted.

Another added: “Kind of insane white lotus Theory that I don’t really think is going to be true, but I want to put it out there just in case: Jennifer Coolidge’s husband is actually the ‘American cowboy’ from Tom Hollander’s story, and they actually staged this whole situation.”

Hopefully things will become clear when episode six arrives next week – but what we do know for sure is that by the end of the season there will be plenty of bodies piling up at the resort.
