‘White Lotus’ creator Mike White explains ‘shocking’ death in finale

Death never stops at the White Lotus.

As season two came to a controversial ending, White Lotus creator Mike White announced Sunday that season three of the sexually charged HBO drama will be set in Asia and focus on “death and Eastern religion and spirituality.” reports Variety.

“The first season was about money and the second season is about sex,” said White, 52. “I think the third season might be a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality. It feels like taking another spin at White Lotus could be a rich tapestry.”

Ahead of the season two premiere, White had hinted that he had always wanted to do a season in Asia.

“I think it would be fun to maybe go to a whole different continent,” White told Deadline. “You know we did Europe and maybe Asia, something crazy that would be fun.”

Meanwhile, viewers took to social media to express their outrage at Sunday’s finale – revealing that fan-favorite character Tanya (played by fan favorite Jennifer Coolidge, 61) was killed off.

“Just finished the White Lotus finale” tweeted a user next to a video of a man hitting a TV.

“Well that was a terrible end to a very mediocre season,” said another disgruntled viewer snored. “I hope next season they bring back the entire remaining cast from Season 1 along with Murray Bartlett’s evil twin brother.”

“Tanya throwing Scarface at everyone just to spoil herself to death is the most tragic and operatic ending,” said another viewer interfered. “I’m glad the only one who could take out Tanya was Tanya and NO MAN!!!”

White revealed that he always intended to kill the diva.

“I thought it would be so fun to bring Tanya back because she’s such a great character, but maybe that’s the journey for her, a journey into her death,” he told the outlet.

“Not that I really wanted to kill Tanya because I love her as a character and obviously love Jennifer, but I just felt like we’re going to Italy, she’s such a diva – a larger than life female archetype – it felt like us we could invent our own operatic conclusion to Tanya’s life and story.”

As of Monday, there is no official release date for Season 3 of The White Lotus.
