The White House is downplaying the US Secret Service’s claim that nearly $100 billion at least has been stolen from COVID-19 relief programs. When asked for comment on Wednesday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said, “There is no new research, data or analysis on fraud here.” The Secret Service told the Associated Press on Tuesday that the estimate is based on Secret Service cases and data from other agencies. A spokesperson for the agency has now said it is not amending a statement on its website, but has added a clarification note to explain the number based on those reports.
