Why is the full moon in February 2023 called the snow moon?
The Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing names for full moons in the 1930’s, and these names are widely known and used today.
February’s full moon was said to have been called the snow moon or storm moon by tribes in the Northeastern United States because heavy snowfall is common at this time of year. Bad weather and snowstorms made hunting difficult, so it was also called the Hunger Moon.
February is the snowiest month in the US, on average, according to data from the National Weather Service.
Alternative names for the snow moon
The February full moon was also reportedly called the wolf moon or candle moon in Europe. The latter is linked to the Christian festival of Candlemas, which takes place on February 2nd and is where candles are blessed.
The snow moon also had names associated with animals in the past. For example, The Cree traditionally referred to February’s full moon as the bald eagle moon or eagle moon. The Ojibwe people knew it as the Bear Moon or the Tlingit Black Bear Moon because it coincided with the time the bear cubs were born.
The Dakota people call it the Raccoon Moon, while other names include the Groundhog Moon and the Goose Moon.
