On December 8, 2021, it was reported that Shakespeare has passed away.

What was the cause of Robbie Shakespeare’s death?

Although his cause of death has yet to be confirmed, The Gleaner reports that Shakespeare is struggling with his kidney health.

He is believed to have lived in Florida at the time of his death, far from his native Jamaica.

Olivia “Basby” Grange, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture and Recreation, released a statement to the Jamaica Observer confirming his passing.

“Robbie’s loss will be felt very badly by the industry at home and abroad. My condolences to those he has left behind,” she said.

Shakespeare and bandmate Sly Dunbar are affectionately known as the “Riddim Twins.”

What are Robbie Shakespeare’s biggest hits?

Sly and Robbie’s most notable songs include Boops, Star Across the Sky and Taxi Connection.

He also lends his bass skills to artists such as Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Dylan and Peter Tosh.

In July 2020, he ranked 17th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 greatest bassists of all time.

Shakespeare told The Gleaner in 2020: “No matter how much people cheer for Sly and Robbie, and despite two Grammy wins and 11 nominations, we never felt that anything like that. Whatever we get in life, we have to get it.”

“There’s been a lot of sleepless nights and ‘no food’ nights. When it’s hungry, we go to bed, so we memorize these things and stock up. There are plenty of other great bassists who are people. that they could have chosen, and yet they chose me, and I’m grateful.”

“RIP Robbie Shakespeare. This man’s work as part of legendary production duo Sly & Robbie and many others will never be forgotten. Gutted. Fly high Basspeare!” one third posted.

One fan affectionately wrote: “Words can’t do justice to the impact of Robbie Shakespeare’s bass playing, unique musical abilities, and sense of rhythm on the musical world. At the same time, too. He was the loveliest, funniest gentleman and gave me the most satire for my radio show on every occasion. Rest in power.”
