What the killer did next: The murder of Megan Newton is investigated in the Sky Crime documentary

The “brutal” murder of student Megan Newton will be the subject of Sky’s true-crime documentary What the killer did next.

18-year-old Newton was raped, strangled and stabbed nine times in 2019 by her former schoolmate, semi-pro footballer Joseph Trevor.

She had bumped into Trevor at around 3:30 a.m. on April 20, 2019 at a taxi rank while she was going out after a shift at one of her three part-time jobs in the evening.

Trevor was drunk after consuming alcohol and drugs and worried about going home to his parents, Stafford Crown Court heard at the trial.

Newton, a self-proclaimed “sports fanatic” working towards her level one FA coaching badge and hoping to win a scholarship in the US, agreed to sleep him in her room on Fletcher Road in Stoke-on-Trent allow.

Prosecutor Adrian Keeling QC said it was a “typical act of kindness” by Newton and there was “no point in offering him anything sexual at all”.

After Trevor arrived at the bedside in a taxi around 4 a.m., Trevor texted his father, then raped Newton, strangled her, and stabbed her nine times in the neck and back.

He was spotted by police sitting by a bridge over the A500 in Stoke after leaving the flat. Newton’s body was discovered by condominium workers later that day.

Trevor pleaded guilty to murder and two counts of rape on day one of the trial, with Judge Michael Chambers QC calling it a “brutal prolonged assault” carried out in “the most callous manner”.

He was sentenced to life in prison and was told he would serve a minimum of 21 years and 65 days in prison before being considered for parole.

A statement from Newton’s father, Michael Baggaley, said: “It breaks my heart to think I’ll never see her beautiful smile or hear her voice again.

“How could this happen to such an amazing, caring, kind, loving, funny young lady? This is something I will never understand and will never get over.”

The synopsis for tonight’s episode, entitled Megan Newton: The Opportunist Murder, reads: “After a teenager is murdered in her apartment, police attempt to track down her killer, starting with a set of blood-stained keys.”

What the killer did next will air tonight (Wednesday 23 November) at 9pm on Sky Crime.
