What is Polar Plunge?

The polar plunge leaves locals and visitors to major cities worldwide ready to plunge into the frigid waters.

Every New Year’s Day, thousands of people come to the polar crisis, and new events are popping up all over the US, including in outbacks like Lynchburg, Virginia, where locals participate. their second annual event.

The polar plunge is thought to have originated in the United States in Boston, Massachusetts in 1904.

It began when the L Street Brownies, a swimming team founded in 1902, plunged into the water on New Year’s Day, creating a cultural phenomenon that continued a century later.

The polar sale event has now become more than just entertainment as cities and towns are using the event as a means of raising funds for those in need.

Is the Polar Plunge a fundraising event?

The drop in the Arctic, sometimes referred to as the polar bear plunge, has been used in recent years as an opportunity to raise funds for the community.

Each form of fundraising varies depending on the event venue, from entertainment sponsorships to special Olympics being held in their locality.

The New Hanover County Special Olympics host in Wilmington, North Carolina benefited from the 2022 plunge at the Kure Beach Pier.

Cassie Danforth, a plunge participant and Special Olympics coach told WECT6 News said participating in the event brought joy to her and the community.

“I think it’s great that everyone is out on the pitch for a good cause,” she said. “Everybody is here, having fun and being happy despite the cold weather.”

Meanwhile, participants in the 2022 Coney Island polar plunge ran into the ice-cold waters for the 119th time to raise money for the New York-based nonprofit.

The nonprofits that received the funds include the New York Aquarium, the Coney Island History Project, Coney Island USA, and the Coney Island YMCA, among others.

The Coney Island drop raised a total of $45k on January 1, 2022, while the North Carolina event raised just over $53k.

Is Polar Plunge Dangerous?

According to Dr. Andrew Schmidt, emergency medicine physician at UF Health in Jacksonville, Florida, the risk of illness or risk is very small for those participating in the polar regions.

However, he said there are some high-risk people who should prepare for the event ahead of time.

  • Wrap a towel and change into warm clothes as soon as you get out of the water
