There was always an air of Greek tragedy island of love. Who are the islanders if not tragic heroes reckoning with their hubris? And for those of us who provide play-by-play commentary on Twitter, aren’t we serving as a chorus? The recent arrival of the evocatively named Antigoni seems to confirm this – and if the Sophocles play is to be believed, it’s going to be a disaster from here on out.
Just as the dust is starting to settle from Tuesday night’s double elimination that got Amber and Ikenna packing, Antigoni enters the villa hoping to stir things up again. The 26-year-old singer-songwriter from London lies sprawled on a sun lounger in the morning, awkwardly waiting for the islanders to wake up and witness her existence. Like Dami, who squeaks at the sight of it before running to the other islanders, I’m a huge fan of this kind of reveal. Arabella made it in the fifth series, and three seasons later it’s still holding up. Plain, simple, effective.
According to the first impression, Antigoni shouldn’t unpack her suitcase just yet. The meeting with the boys is going perfectly, but the sparks are far from flying. Phrases like “real girl,” “lively conversation,” and “she has great energy” are thrown around in what appears to be code for “She would be a great friend!” Nevertheless, Antigoni persists and arranges three picnic dates with Davide, Jay and Dami. All the boys look just as bored to be there as I watch them. Admittedly, it’s a tough life for a late bombshell. Alliances were forged; Couples had that crucial little bit more time together. Dissolving a happy home isn’t as easy as it used to be. For what it’s worth, Antigoni actually has great chat.
Elsewhere in the episode, Jay further explores his connection to Paige. Well, as much as he can without ever speaking to her. Instead, he tells everyone else, meaning it returns to Ekin-Su within hours. After all, they all live together! Ekin-Su, already upset by the arrival of Antigoni, is further agitated by this information and questions the girls separately if they think Jay will remain loyal or not. The answer – although nicely phrased in a “well, if he doesn’t, then he was never right for you anyway” – is a loud and resolute NO. Watching this show really gives you whiplash; It feels like just yesterday that Jay Ekin-Su said he would leave the mansion with her if she was sent home. Although in this case it was literally yesterday.
Love Island wouldn’t be Love Island without a last-minute surprise. Another bombshell – Charlie – enters the mansion before the evening party, but we only have about 30 seconds of conversation before it goes black. I guess we’ll tune in tonight then.
