West Houston Assistance Departments seek to raise funds to support domestic abuse victims

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The West Houston Department of Assistance has provided food, rent, clothing, etc. to Houstonians since its founding in 1982. However, a recent trend is forcing the organization nonprofits must add an entirely new program to the list of services.

“We have had a large influx of clients who have been victims of domestic violence,” said Sonya Scott of the West Houston Department of Support. “We are asking for donations to help these individuals.”

Scott said WHAM sees 15 domestic violence survivors each year. That number has grown to 289 by 2021, so they are working on a long-term solution for survivors to get the help and support they need to recover from abusive relationships.

Mr Scott said: “The money raised will help (survivors) secure an apartment, registration fees, transport, childcare and food. “Those are some of the things we want to do with this program.”

Barbie Brashear, executive director of the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordination Council, said domestic violence cases are on the rise throughout Harris County. Brashear said felony-level domestic violence attacks have increased by more than 50% in the past two years, while domestic violence homicides have increased similarly between 2020 and 2021.

“What is really disturbing is this is what is being reported,” Brashear said. “What hasn’t been reported in our community?”

Brashear said getting help from programs like the one being started at the West Houston Department of Assistance can have a huge impact on victims of domestic violence.

“It’s been successful — someone says they feel more secure because they have a resource,” says Brashear. “There are real tangible results from those (resources).”

West Houston Departments of Assistance have applied for funding but said private grants are now needed to launch the program in a timely manner.
