WEST HAM made a final bid for Leeds and England star Kalvin Phillips on the deadline day.
Hammer Negotiator Karren Brady has contacted former ally Angus Kinnear at Elland Road, ready to raise their record £50m offer.
The Londoners are prepared to spend £55m on the midfield they want to partner with team-mate Declan Rice.
Insiders say the move started after the clubs met three weeks ago.
But the opportunity was lost Leeds’ defeat against Newcastle.
The 0-1 defeat left them still in trouble for relegation and reluctantly had to lose the talisman of Phillips, 26.
Phillips is also a target for Manchester United The Red Devils are desperate to sign a new central midfielder this summer.
Hammers amulet – and Phillips’ England midfield partner – Rice are also on United’s radar.
But David Moyes warned that he would cost up to 100 million pounds.
The Hammers boss said: “You’re going to need huge sums of money to get close.
“I said in the summer that I think Declan Rice is worth £100m. It’s your chance to get him for cheap. You can make up your mind on what I am talking about now.
“I feel his commitment. He has a contract and we are really pleased to have him. He’s definitely been here for a few years.
“He’s like a special edition Declan Rice, there aren’t many like him.
“He is said to play as well as any midfielder in European football, and the price is very expensive in January, isn’t he?”
