Wednesday: Netflix viewers hail the “brilliant casting” of a role in The Addams Family

Netflix viewers have welcomed a small but important casting in the new Addams Family adaptation. Wednesday.

The series, based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams, sees Jenna Ortega (X; Jane the maiden) play Wednesday Addams.

Supporting cast includes Luiz Guzmán, who plays Gomez, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the 1990s film adaptations, also appears as one of Wednesday’s teachers.

However, there was one casting Netflix kept secret until just before the series’ release date earlier this week: who would play Uncle Fester?

It turns out Fester is played by the comedian and ex on the show Saturday night live Star Fred Armisen.

Viewers expressed their delight at the casting on social media, with some calling the decision to cast Armisen “brilliant.”

“I think a lot Wednesday But one thing is for sure, Fred Armisen as Fester was a brilliant casting,” one person wrote.

“FRED ARMISEN IS UNCLE FESTER LMAOOOOO I yelled,” wrote another.

“I have no complaints about the casting,” commented another. “I think Jenna Ortega did a great job on Wednesday. Morticia and Gomez were also (mostly) well cast and portrayed. Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester was brilliant, I loved him.”

“Jenna Ortega is great as Wednesday Addams. And Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester? Perfection,” wrote another viewer.

In the live-action film adaptations, Fester was portrayed by Back to the Future Star Christopher Lloyd.

While many viewers have praised the series online, Wednesday has received mixed reviews.

In a two star rating for The IndependentNick Hilton criticized the first season of WednesdayShe writes, “For a show about vampires and werewolves, she has very little bite.”
