WATCH: Truck driver questioned by police hours after fatal collision with I-70

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (KDVR) – Footage obtained by FOX31 shows Rogel Aguilera-Mederos in a two-and-a-half-hour interview with police, hours after his death The 2019 accident in which he was convicted.

In the interview, Aguilera-Mederos talks about his experience driving in the mountains and in Colorado.

“At that point, he realized he was going over the hill, he started squeezing the brakes and they didn’t work,” said an unnamed Lakewood police officer who interpreted for Aguilera-Mederos.

The injured Aguilera-Mederos apparently limped out of his chair after being questioned for more than two hours after the deadly crash on Interstate-70.

When asked by a police interpreter if this was his first time driving a car in Colorado, Aguilera-Mederos replied no.

Aguilera-Mederos told investigators he drove through Colorado three times.

He added that he took a detour on his trip to I-70 because he needed to get gas and that he knew diesel prices were lower on this route.

“So he said he drove I-70 three or four times,” said the unnamed police interpreter.

New footage obtained by FOX31 shows Aguilera-Mederos in his truck, speeding through I-70 traffic.

Another angle shows his truck speeding out of view, moments later and a plume of black smoke rising.

Aguilera-Mederos said he has driven in mountainous terrain in Wyoming, Montana and Washington.

“When he saw the road going off the ramp, that’s when he realized the brakes weren’t working,” said the police interpreter, who asked not to be named.

Aguilera-Mederos clarified to investigators why he did not use the getaway truck ramp.

“He saw the sign, but in terms of seeing the actual roadway, letting the trucks get away, he never saw that,” said the unnamed police interpreter.

Aguilera-Mederos was originally sentenced to 110 years in prison but after public outcryIn late December, Governor Jared Polis pardoned him, reducing his sentence to 10 years.

He will be eligible for parole in December 2026.
