Lamela, who joined Sevilla last summer, beat competition from Patrik Shick and Mehdi Taremi to claim the coveted prize.

Appearing on screen during tonight’s awards ceremony, Lamela said: “Thank you very much. I am very happy to win this award.

“In that moment, I didn’t think much, didn’t realize how special the goal was, I just kicked and ran around.”

The rabona attack occurred during the fierce North London clash between Spurs and Arsenal on March 14.

Sergio Reguilon makes a cross from the left side of the Arsenal box and immediately touches Lucas Moura, who is standing on the penalty spot.

The Brazilian, without hesitation, gave it to Lamela, who was standing directly to his left.

And using pure instinct, while also not making a single touch, the player wrapped his left foot around his right ankle to instantly kick the ball into goal.

The ball knocked out £45m Arsenal centre-back Thomas Partey and slid past Bernd Leno in the far corner.

But despite being sent off for two yellow cards for an explosion, Lamela has now been awarded one of football’s top prizes.

Former teammate Jan Vertonghen, now at Benfica, also came forward to take some credit, having presented Lamela with the Puskas award shortly after the strike.

The Belgian defender tweeted: “Call me a millionaire.”

This is not the first time rabona has been recognized, with Lamela giving Premier League’s best goal of the season previous awards.

But on Monday, the Argentinian was crowned the top spot at the previous Fifpro Awards Shick’s attempt against Scotland.

Czech Republic striker Bayer Leverkusen fired a shot 50 yards from the midfield line past David Marshall during the Euro clash in July.

And the great effort was subsequently named Goal of the Tournament.

Lamela also saw off Porto ace Taremi, who scored a great bike kick in his team’s Champions League debut to Chelsea. Watch Erik Lamela’s ‘rabona’ strike against Arsenal to win the Fifa Puskas Award
