WARNING DAY: High heat and a low risk of severe storms today

RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — It’s a CBS 17 Storm Team Alert Day as we anticipate intense heat and the possibility of severe storms in the late afternoon and evening.

It will be hot and muggy today and a heat advisory is in effect for most of central North Carolina this afternoon through 7 p.m. tonight. Heat indices could reach as high as 106 this afternoon. The hot temperatures and high humidity can lead to heat sickness.

In the late afternoon and especially in the evening isolated thunderstorms will develop. There is a low risk for all of central North Carolina that any storm could generate harmful winds and even large hail. The timing for each severe storm will be this Wednesday from 3pm to 11pm.

Thursday will be similar, with scattered showers and storms developing in the afternoon. All of central North Carolina is again at low risk that a storm could generate damaging winds. The timing for each severe storm will be from afternoon through Thursday evening.

There is less chance of a severe storm on Friday, but scattered storms will occur in the afternoon and evening hours. Humidity will be quite high and heat indices could climb above 105 on Friday so another heat warning could be needed.

If a cold front approaches late Saturday, more rain showers and storms are likely in the afternoon. Highs will at least fall into the upper 80s on Saturday.
