(Hill) – Walmart is set to hire more than 3,000 new employees to expand its home delivery service.

The retailer made the announcement on Tuesday, detailing its hopes to hire more delivery drivers and build a fleet of electric delivery vans, according to Reuters.

Walmart says it now has about 100 drivers and services about 6 million homes. It is aiming to serve nearly 30 million homes by the end of the year, the news agency said.

Walmart launched “At Home” delivery in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 2019. Through the program, shoppers have the option to have their items delivered directly to their homes and in some cases, can order groceries right into their kitchen or garage. Reuters reports if they are not at home.

Walmart drivers are said to be given an access code combined with a “smart” entry key to get in.

COVID-19 has increased the desire to deliver groceries online, with services like Instacart, Uber and Amazon creating competition for Walmart, Reuters noted.

Walmart is said to be aiming to improve its delivery options over the past few years. In 2017, the retailer created a last-mile delivery service program that allows store employees to fulfill orders online after they complete their shifts in-store.
