As Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine grows more horrific, he becomes more desperate to hide the truth from his own citizens. He will inevitably fail – and become weaker and weaker as he fails.
Russia’s favorite parliament on Friday enact a law Threat of 15 years in prison for those who tell truths Putin doesn’t want anyone to hear. In response, large networks cut back their reporting from Russia.
But in this age he cannot stop the flow of information to Russia, even if he stopped access to Facebook and Twitter. The nation with some of the world’s best hackers has far too many citizens to end its censorship.
So, Russians will hear the verdict of personalities like Pope Francis in St. Peter’s Square: “Rivers of blood and tears are flowing in Ukraine. This is not just a military operation, but a war that will sow death, destruction and misery.”
And they see video like this Women and children flee bombing raids in Irpin and all the photos of civilian corpses on the street.
You will know that Putin’s claim that he does not wage war on civilians is just a sick lie.
He can’t stop the flow of images from Ukraine either: world media are still operating there and will certainly pay attention to it Olena Zelenska’s plea that they are exposing the “terrible truth: Russian invaders are killing Ukrainian children”.
Elon Musk’s Starlink terminals keep the internet running also in Ukraine. Musk is Right to to warn that Russia will try to target users in zones it controls, but Putin’s forces are already strained – and Ukrainians will find ways to turn such targeting into a trap.
Putin’s first steps have already (finally) awakened Western governments to his true nature, and the continued media coverage of his atrocities has already woken Americans Support for a no-fly zone and other possibilities to help even as US elected officials are still cowed by the autocrat’s threats of nuclear war.
It is far too early to say that the conquest of Ukraine will fail utterly; at the very least, Putin will wipe out thousands more innocent lives.
Yet wading ever deeper in blood doesn’t change the simple fact that he’s behind the curve on every front apart from the helpless to martyrs.
No one can yet know exactly what these defeats will mean, but one way or another they bring his own demise closer and closer.
