Vladimir Putin removed from all posts on Judo Board

Russian President Vladimir Putin and a Russian businessman have been removed from all positions in the International Judo Federation (IJF), the sport’s governing body said in the latest sporting reprimand following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The decision to be announced shortly statementcomes after Putin, a black belt who co-authored the book titled “Judo: History, Theory, Practice,” was suspended as IJF honorary president last week.

“The International Judo Federation announces that Mr. Vladimir Putin and Mr. Arkady Rotenberg have been removed from all positions in the International Judo Federation,” it said.

Billionaire businessman Arkady Rotenberg has served on the IJF Executive Committee since 2013 as Development Manager.

The federation made no mention of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but said on February 27 that it would suspend Putin as IJF honorary president “given the ongoing war conflict in Ukraine.”

Putin was also stripped of his honorary taekwondo black belt, bestowed on him by World Taekwondo in 2013, and a FINA medal bestowed on him by the global swimming organization in 2014.

Since the start of what Putin has called “a special military operation” in Ukraine, Russian and Belarusian teams and athletes have been banned from international competitions in all sports

Belarus was a major theater of Russia’s invasion of its neighbor.

The IJF has also canceled a May 20-22 Grand Slam event in Kazan, Russia.
