Viral TikTok shows Mariah Carey’s teleprompter at Macy’s Parade

Mariah Carey may have needed some help with the lyrics to All I Want For Christmas at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade this year.

A viral TikTok shows the Grammy Award-winning artist singing in front of a teleprompter that displays the lyrics to the decades-old iconic Christmas tune.

“Yes, Mariah Carey uses a teleprompter for lyrics to her most famous song at the Macy’s Day Parade,” user Sydney Barina captioned the video, which had more than 5 million views as of Sunday.

Though the video clearly shows the lyrics on screen, it’s unclear if Carey actually used the backing to sing the Christmas classic.

Carey has sung the song hundreds of times, and the practice of using a teleprompter seems standard for the whole parade.

Many Mariah fans defended the pop star in the comments, calling the device an essential tool for live recording.

“TV production staff here, the whole show has them in the script. For them, it’s probably a failover in case their in-ear fails,” commented one user.

“People don’t understand how live TV/performing works. When the sound drops out in her ear, she doesn’t know where she is in the song. there is an echo,” said another person.

The comments in defense of the Queen of Christmas garnered tens of thousands of likes.

“It’s called the Confidence Monitor. Many singers and artists use them. We use them at the church I work for,” said another person.

Carey admitted to being something of a diva in a recent interview with W Magazine.

“Yes, I play with you. And yes, some of it is real,” she said. “I can not help it.”
