Vicente Fernández dies: Mexican singer and King of Rancheras die 81

Mexican singer Vicente Fernández has died at the age of 81, it has been announced.

The music icon’s family confirmed his death on Sunday morning but did not disclose the cause of death.

In a post shared on Fernández’s Instagram page, they said: ‘Rest in peace, Mr Vicente Fernández. We regret to inform you of his death on Sunday, December 12 at 6:15 a.m

‘It is an honor and pride to share with everyone a wonderful musical career and dedicate everything to his audience.’

‘Thank you for continuing to clap, thank you for continuing to sing,’ they concluded.

Mexico’s cultural secretary, Alejandra Frausto, led the tributes and tweeted: ‘One of the most important artists of Mexican popular culture, undisputed icon of ranchera music, has died. passed away. A million mariachis accompany you on your way. ‘

The cause of death was not given but Fernández has been hospitalized since August, when he was brought in after a serious fall and for treatment related to various illnesses.

Fernández is known as the King of Rancheras and has won eight Latin Grammy Awards during his career, and has sold a staggering 50 million records worldwide. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998.

Musician who pioneered the ranchera mariachi musical style, and is known for his hit singles El Roy, Volver, Volver and Lástima Que Seas Ajena.

Also known by his nickname Chente, Fernández’s death happened to be December 12, a date he usually made to mark the Catholic pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City.

He gave his final performance in April 2016, appearing in front of approximately 85,000 people at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

In addition to a successful musical career, Fernández has starred in more than 30 films.
