Vic Mensa is the newest rapper pay respects for the late Virgil Abloh, dropping the touching tribute “What You Taught Us.” Through a soulful, self-produced rhythm, Vic writes an open letter to the designer, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 41 After two years of fighting cancer. “You showed us that we can all be the designer of our own destiny for our legacies,” he rhymes. “Our environment from the streets of Chicago to Paris fashion week.”
In a press release, Mensa shared how seeing Abloh open up many possibilities for his own future. “Virgil Abloh is synonymous with foresight,” he said. “To see him go from the DJing Superfun parties in Chicago that Hollywood Holt invited me to when I was 16 to revolutionizing the way we think about design and its applications was a real inspiration for a generation fortunate to have grown up under his tutelage. Legends never die.”
Vic isn’t the only one to write about Virgil’s impact. Tyler The Creator also shared an Instagram post revealing how the designer motivated him to try new things and started using “more of my African surname OKONMA because of the Virgils regal feel.” Similarly, Frank Ocean also shared his own post on Instagram, calling Virgil “a hero”.
