Vermont HS volleyball team banned from locker room over transgender dispute

Most members of a Vermont high school volleyball team were reportedly banned from their own locker room after interfering with a transgender athlete.

Blake Allen, who plays for Randolph Union High School’s girls’ volleyball team, told WCAX how uncomfortable she is.

“It’s a huge thing… everyone’s like, ‘Why can’t you go in the locker room?’ ” She said.

The issue began after an argument with a transgender athlete who has not been publicly identified, WCAX reported.

The athlete is said to have made an “inappropriate remark” to other players, who then complained. WCAX reports.

Whatever was said hasn’t come out, the outlet reported.

Some team members want the transgender player relocated, but Vermont state law allows students to play sports and use the locker that matches the gender they identify with.

“They want all the girls who are uncomfortable to change in a one-stall bathroom, which would take over 30 minutes,” Allen said. “If a person changed their clothes separately, it would take a minute, like no extra time.”

The school emailed the players’ families after the incident, explaining that the school has “plenty of space for students who are uncomfortable with the laws to change their privacy.”

Allen said the problem wasn’t the transgender athlete’s presence on the team, but in the dressing room.

“There are biological boys who go into the girls’ bathroom but never into a dressing room,” Allen said.

School officials sent another email telling the parents that they are investigating allegations that the volleyball girls molested the transgender student.

Randolph High School co-president Lisa Randolph said that violations of the policy will result in disciplinary action consistent with school rules, adding that student safety is “the top priority of the district.”

State policy is that a transgender student should not be required to use a locker room or restroom that is inconsistent with the student’s gender identity.
