The annual meeting is scheduled to begin Friday and be held throughout the weekend at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

“In light of recent events in Texas, I have decided that it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to represent the NRA at their convention in Houston this week. I’m sure all the people planning to attend this event are shocked and disgusted by these events as well. After all, we are all Americans,” Don McLean said in a statement to CNN. “I share the grief of this terrible, cruel loss with the rest of the nation.”

Larry Gatlin, of Gatlin Brothers fame, has also canceled his gigs, telling CNN in part, “I can’t in good conscience perform at the NRA Houston conference this weekend.”

“While I agree with most of the NRA’s positions, I’ve come to believe that while background checks wouldn’t stop every madman with a gun, it’s at least a step in the right direction to try and prevent some kind of tragedy.” that we saw in Uvalde this week — in my beloved, crying TEXAS,” Gatlin said in a statement. “I’m a 2nd Amendment guy, but the 2nd Amendment shouldn’t apply to everyone. As simple as that.”

The annual meeting is open to NRA members only. According to its website, the organization currently has over five million members.

Larry Stewart, who contributed lead vocals in the band Restless Heart, has also opted not to perform.

“I want to honor the victims, families, the city and our friends in the great state of Texas to the best of my ability,” the statement said.
