Uvalde School Police Chief Pete Arredondo is ‘a coward’: neighbor

The Texas police officer under investigation into how he handled the response to the Uvalde school massacre remained under police protection outside the compound on Saturday – while an angry neighbor called him a “coward”.

Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo called that the carnage at Robb Elementary School on Tuesday went from an “active gunner” situation to a “barricaded suspect” standoff, which a senior state police officer admitted was “the wrong decision”.

State investigators are investigating whether Arredondo was even carrying a police radio when he made the decision, a law enforcement source told the Post.

Police waited more than half an hour to force down the door to two classrooms connected by a bathroom where gunman Salvador Ramos, 18, was trapped with children, some of whom were alive, and made numerous calls to 911.

“Pete Arredondo is a coward. He didn’t do his job. He let the kids down,” said neighbor Lydia Torres, 56.

Torres spoke as local police spent the day guarding Arredondo’s home. The embattled boss repeatedly declined to comment on Saturday.

Torres was furious Arredondo, who heads police for the consolidated independent school district of Uvalde, went into hiding after the state’s top police officer revealed new details about the police response. At least 19 officers were in the hallway when Ramos fired on the door, but police did not advance until a tactical unit arrived and killed the gunman, authorities said.

The local police have been on guard outside Arredondo’s house 24 hours a day.

“I don’t understand why the Uvalde, Texas police are guarding Pete Arredondo’s home,” Torres said. “He is hiding in his house and asks the PD to patrol the area and guard his house day and night. He should come out and speak up.”

The emotional Uvalde woman said parents of children killed by Ramos deserved an explanation from Arredondo as to why he had not stormed the classroom sooner.

“I want to know why the 19 police officers in the hallway didn’t act immediately when the children were begging for help,” she said. “If they can’t protect the children and citizens of Uvalde, Texas, then they have nothing to do with law enforcement.
